REFLECTIONS ON THE READINGS
6TH SUNDAY OF EASTER
1. First Reading Acts 15.1-2, 22-29
Was the Church ever free from controversy? Why were the individuals from Judea convinced that circumcision was necessary for salvation? Would they have been shocked at the “liberal” attitude of Paul and Barnabas? Is the practice of our faith today similarly challenged by lack of uniformity in opinion? How does the dispute resolution process of that time compare with current decision-making in the Catholic Church? Are the instructions of that first Council still considered important for salvation for Catholics? Does the Church ever change her teaching? On what? When? How?
Psalm 67: “May God be gracious to us and bless us and make his face to shine upon us, that your way may be known upon earth, your saving power among all nations.”
2. Second Reading Revelation 21.10-14, 22-23
What does this imagery about the new Jerusalem, the holy city of God, say to me? What does the description mean for the Jewish people? What does it mean for Christians? Is the absence of a temple meaningful? What is the most important characteristic of this city?
“Alleluia! Whoever loves me will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him.”
3. Gospel Reading John 14.23-29
Can I love, without being aware that I love? Can I think that I love someone, yet not manifest love through my actions? What does Jesus mean when he speaks of loving him? Does God make his home in people who do not know him? Does God make his home in people who do not keep his word? Why did the Father send the Holy Spirit? Have I been aware of the Holy Spirit’s presence in my life? Am I open to the Spirit? Have I experienced the peace Jesus gave? Do I turn to him when I am troubled or afraid? |
